  • The gauge of a firearm is a unit of measurement used to express the diameter of the barrel. Gauge is determined from the weight of a solid sphere of lead that will fit the bore of the firearm, and is expressed as the multiplicative inverse of the sphere's weight as a fraction of a pound (e.g.

I sometimes want to live in a cardboard box

I sometimes want to live in a cardboard box

Why do they have to write things on the rim of the lens?
"Optical Lens". Good one, just in case we think it's actually a "Sonic Lens". No no, silly me, it could be an "Edible Lens."
"Olympus Wide Zoom Lens". Like it's going to be a sodding Canon lens on an Olympus camera? Even if it were a Canon lens, and it weren't a zoom but instead a 60mm fixed, don't you think you'd KNOW by now having spent good dollar on the camera in the shop?

And why the HELL are we subjected to constant talking through speakers on the underground? If you don't know where you are going on the tube, there are maps (if you were stupid enough not to check your journey before you actually got on a train).

Don't give me the 'blind people' argument. If you are blind, then you've done a bloody impressive job getting yourself onto the right underground train, navigating the unfriendly escalators into the various miserable abysses of our public transport in the first place; I think you'd manage the relatively simple task of COUNTING stops, don't you?

What would we do if there weren't announcements? We'd all be murdered in our beds wouldn't we? How would we know the Charing Cross branch of the Misery Line was closed for engineering works?! Oh no!

How would we know? Well, we would start checking things before our journey. Yes we would, because we would have to. We would think to ourselves "it's a good idea to look at this very clearly written information board" before we embark upon our journey.

Simple. If you need information specific to you, go get it yourself. Don't make the whole bloody world suffer an onslaught of information that probably doesn't affect them. They will only be more confused in the long run, having to strain their ears every time something is announced in a shitty voice you can barely hear anyway.

I hate visual and auditory pollution. Life would be so damned nice if I could interact with the world without it. If I could walk down the tomatoes aisle in Tesco without bloody pictures of tomatoes everywhere. I don't need to see your crap photography of tomatoes when I have the real thing right there on the shelves. Why not just put up the word in nice bold text, nice and high above the aisle so they could be located from the other side of the shop? Perhaps a simple black font, with a pure white background. No tomato photos. I don't mind if you use all-caps. Like this perhaps:

No need to say "tomatoes here" or "buy tomatoes here" because it's implicit isn't it, really?

I have successfully eliminated advertisements from my life. I use adblock online, I have thrown my television out (I lie - never had one), I don't go anywhere where I am subjected to commercial radio (I try not to walk in the streets where it may be playing), and I try not to read the awful newspapers whose primary reason for existing is to sell me things. And so it greatly upsets me when Tesco play videos about slimming products, the speakers are on the same level as my ears when I am looking at parsnips or avocados.

Life would be wonderful without it all. Failing that I shall continue to do what I normally do, which is to not bother going out. It's pointless isn't it? Unless you need something specifically, it's pointless. There's too much mess outside.

Fatal traffic accidents in the Turkish construction industry [An article from: Safety Science]

Fatal traffic accidents in the Turkish construction industry [An article from: Safety Science]

This digital document is a journal article from Safety Science, published by Elsevier in 2005. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Occupational safety as well as highway traffic safety has a poor performance record in Turkey. Especially in the construction industry figures are dramatic. Falls, contact with electricity and accidents involving heavy equipment are the three foremost causes of occupational fatalities in the construction sector. In Turkey, the majority of companies are small or middle sized contractors; and due to the nature of this industry it requires paying more attention to safety management practices. It should also be noted that the number of registered workers in the construction industry is low. Unfortunately, the occupational injury records according to the Social Insurance Institution General Directorate solely include casualties among registered workers. Additionally, official statistics only give the number of total injuries, fatalities or permanent incapacity cases classified according to the different industries. The first attempt to classify the construction injuries in Turkish construction industry came in 1993 [Mungen, U., 1993. Turkiye'de Insaat Is Kazalarinin Analizi ve Is Guvenligi Sorunu, Yayinlanmamis Doktora Tezi, Istanbul Teknik Universitesi]. After this study, the Social Insurance Institution General Directorate archives were regularly visited and insurance claim records for construction injuries were separated. In the scope of this study, about 40,000 occupational accidents in all industries have been investigated. 4347 of these injuries occurred at construction sites, 1774 of them are fatal injury records. From the fatal cases 168 traffic accidents were taken into consideration and the analysis and classification of these accidents were done according to the way they happened, the type of construction site and the type of occupation of the victim. It should be stated that the study not only focused on highway work zones, but also on all types of construction work. The hazards for pedestrians, drivers, equipment operators and auxiliary personnel such as flaggers were identified and according to the results obtained, and taking into account the conditions of Turkish construction industry certain suggestions are made.

Machine Shop

Machine Shop

The industrial revolution that occurred across the United States in the latter half of the 1800s created the need for establishments such as the F. J. Curtis Machine Shop, which was located at the corner of Water Street (now West Avenue) and Union Street. According to the sign on the front of the building, this shop manufactured engines & boilers, power and hand pumps, and also sold machine, engine and cylinder oil, as well as gas pipes and fittings. As more industries became mechanized, machine shops prospered by providing skill labor to fix machines and manufacture the parts needed to make the
machines run. Farmers, canal boat captains, railroad workers, and well drillers relied on these early ancestors of the modern tool and die shop for their equipment and parts. Machine shops multiplied into the thousands in the Rochester area during the 1880s and 1890s, and the area became known as a manufacturing hub in the northeast. Area shops produced a variety of patented machines such as Gordon Grain Binder, the Howe Scales, the Sunningham Carriages, the Gleason Gears, and, in Spencerport, the Hoy Potato Digger.
